ATT: Has your child’s airway development been assessed?

Dr. Acker and his team pride themselves on continued education to better serve patients oral health and total wellness.

Our team spent this past weekend learning about airway management with Pediatric Dentist Dr. Jeffrey Rouse, who has international prominence in this field.

Airway management is an evolving field in dentistry and a subject we want to bring to light for many parents with young children.

If you are asking one of the following questions, it is important to consider they may have a constructed airway.

• Is my child tongue-tied?

• Why is my child a mouth breather or snorer?

• Why does my child grind?

• Why can’t my baby latch on to the breast?

A 2012 study of 17,000 children evaluated the growth and airway development, and how we should treat children worldwide. The findings support earlier assessment in children as young as 2 for snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS), and sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.

During your child’s first dental exam, your dentist should be assessing their airway. Often for children suffering from an airway restriction, intervention is too late. This is something which can alter the child’s growth and cause them to adapt to this condition in a harmful way.
