Know the warning signs

If you suffering from the early stages of gum disease it is important to visit us to reduce the risk of tooth loss. Below are a few early warning signs that can indicate the presence of gum disease:

If left untreated, periodontal disease may lead to tooth loss. It is the most common infectious disease in the world.  Healthy gums are pale pink, smooth and firm; however, if an infection develops between the teeth, the gums will begin to pull away. They will also become red and swollen and even bleed during chewing and brushing.

Previously, extraction was virtually the only option for those patients suffering from periodontal disease. Today, however through continual developments in periodontal treatment, every possible step is taken to save all teeth and repair the gums. Although periodontal disease is a serious condition, its effects can be stopped and disease progression halted with proper treatment.

What are the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease?

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing teeth
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Mouth sores
  • Receding gums or gums that have pulled away from teeth
  • Spaces developing between teeth
  • Bad Breath
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Loose Teeth
  • Change in bight alignment

How does periodontal disease occur?

Most bacteria that reside in the mouth are harmless, and cause no damage to your tooth structures or gums. However there is a more serious strain, called Streptococcus, that thrive on the acid produced by food and sugars, and causes them to multiply. The bacteria begin to accumulate on the teeth, which we know as plaque – if neglected, this plaque then solidifies to tartar, and require a professional scale and clean to remove, as normal brushing is useless against it. If this tartar is left untreated, the gum tissue begins to become inflamed, sore and infected, and results withdrawing away from the teeth, resulting in weaker teeth and large gum pockets

Prevention is always better than a cure

Gum disease can often be prevented by brushing your teeth morning and night, and flossing at least once a day, preferably before sleep.
